Faculty Friday - featuring one of our fabulous History Teachers, Shannon Foley! What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far? I have always been fascinated with people, their backgrounds, and their experiences. Work and travel have opened many opportunities to learn about people from backgrounds other than mine, I wanted to bring those experiences and the history of those people into a classroom, which is what led me to be a History teacher. Working at Tri-County I have learned so much about the vocational fields my students are enrolled in and I have made life-long friendships, I have explored new areas of History and taught many different History classes and electives. I would not change anything about my journey so far because each aspect of my job has helped me to grow personally and professionally. Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know? Teaching is my second career. I worked in the restaurant business for 20 years, where I met people from various backgrounds. What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching? I love spending time with my family, traveling, live music, and traveling to see live music! I also love going to Disney as much as possible. What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students? Value your uniqueness and don't be afraid to try new things or hang out with people you may think are different. Surrender to flow and don't forget to have fun because your time here is short.

It's Faculty Friday! Today we will feature two of our fabulous teachers! First up is Special Education Consultant, Julie Caffrey! What Inspired you to become a teacher? After I graduated college I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do so I started substitute teaching in my home town and fell in love with it. I lucked out and got a long term sub position for a 6th grade classroom alongside a former teacher of mine and he helped mentor me. I started coaching at 16 years old so teaching gave me the opportunity to also pursue my love for coaching. I went on to get my masters in mathematics and then continued my education getting licensed in special education. The thing I love most about teaching and coaching is the lifelong relationships I get to build with my students and athletes. Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know? I worked as a plumbing apprentice for my dad for a couple years while I figured out my future. I liked it a lot! I learned more than I anticipated and can still do some simple plumbing basics around my house. If I didn’t become a teacher, I probably would’ve stuck with the plumbing profession! What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching? I enjoy working out (even with 2 bad knees)- running, walking and hiking. I traveled to Montana this summer and hiked around 30 miles. I’ve recently gotten over my fear of flying so now I try to travel somewhere new every year! I enjoy spending time and laughing with my friends and family and cuddling with my cat! What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students? Perseverance is the greatest quality you can have in life. Despite setbacks and hard times, keep pushing and moving forward. Eventually everything will work itself out.

Alumni All Star Hayley Sullivan! Hayley is a graduate of the Cosmetology Class of 2022! She currently attends Framingham State University and is an Environmental Science Major. Hayley currently works in a hair salon while in school. She loves the atmosphere and being close with coworkers and peers and says continuing to work helps her with communication, multitasking and important career skills. Her favorite memory from high school was playing on the volleyball team and winning the vocational tournament in 2021. She misses it every day! Hayley’s high school experience in Ms. Sibilia’s environmental science class influenced her and inspired her to go to college and make a career in the science field. A project that had a significant impact on her was learning about carbon footprint. It inspired her to learn more about ways to help the environment and contribute to sustainability. The skills she learned in her shop definitely helps her in the real world and switching to college. Hayley learned how to properly communicate with clients/peers. She also learned about work ethic and passion and drive from her amazing shop teachers. All these skills help her in everyday life and her school/career. Advice from Hayley to current students: “Make connections with others every opportunity you have, and respect your teachers, you never know who might help or inspire you in the future. Also, it’s ok if you still don’t know what you want to do in the future. It took me a year after school and working full time to figure out what I wanted to pursue!”

Eric Bernard is a 2018 of the Computer Information Systems program! Eric earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from UMass Dartmouth in 2022. He is now an Engineer of Software II, working for HII Unmanned Systems, developing control software for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). He works on all parts of the tech stack, mostly working on the web-application’s user interface, but also on the backend control stack, and sometimes on a boat to work with the hardware! His favorite memories are from Robotics! He got to meet so many talented, smart people, learned & gained so much technical & interpersonal experience. Taking the project Boston and Detroit for competitions was rewarding and super fun. Eric says the weekly switch from academics to real-world shop experience was what he needed in order to stay engaged and succeed academically. Being able to go out to work at a real job on co-op senior year gave him a head-start to his career. The “International Ace Station” game that his group made for HUNCH would have to be his favorite project. It earned his team a silver medal SkillsUSA Nationals. Eric’s advice to students: “Do not let it pass you by. I specifically remember when I was a new student and the seniors were called in to talk to us and one of them said “this time will fly”, and I didn’t really believe it. Now, as the time between my first day of high-school and now continues to slip by, I cannot believe how many memories I packed into that short amount of time. There’s the obvious advice - join clubs, make friends, do your homework - but above all else I’d say find something there that makes you comfortable and happy to show up every morning. There isn’t a “playbook” to success that you might feel pressured into at other schools - Tri-County as a school reflects its values of allowing you to choose your path and find where you’re comfortable. Your desires may change and it’s likely that there’s something at the school that will appeal to you - do not let that opportunity pass you by! And, if you have an idea for a club or activity that doesn’t yet exist, be the change you want to see.”

Matt is a 2017 from the Electrical Wiring Technology Shop! He furthered his education through an apprentice program for electrical. He is currently a licensed Journeyman Electrician in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. He has worked for Professional Electrical Contractors since 2016 before he started his senior year at Tri-County. Matt says his favorite memory from high school would have to be all the games such as Family Feud, Jeopardy, Kahoot, etc. that his Electrical shop teachers, Mr. McKeown and Mr. Sprague created to help the class learn the electrical code. It was so much fun and got really competitive. His high school experience influenced his career path since his freshman year. He says it all started during the Freshmen Exploratory experience. He originally came to Tri-County dead set on being in CIS but as he finished exploring nine shops he realized he liked working with his hands and building things. He started in HVAC his freshman year but decided it just wasn’t working so he switched to Electrical starting sophomore year and says it’s the best decision he’s made. One project that had a major impact on him was the traffic light project he did his junior year. The shop managed to get a hold of the programming system for the traffic light that’s on a cart. Matt was picked to wire it up to a motion sensor and figure out how to program it. It’s still used in the shop to this day! The skills and knowledge he gained at Tri-County helped him learn the basics of electrical wiring and helped him get enough hours to count as a second year apprentice right out of high school! This helped him to get his electrical license earlier than most! Matt’s advice to current high school students: “Don’t stress too hard and enjoy school while it lasts. These are your final years you get to see friends and make lifelong friendships before life takes over.” #WorkHardTodayCounts
