What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far? I think I pretty much always wanted to be a teacher. But, as a graduate student I got to teach a Creative Writing class at BU, and it was so much fun. After that, I knew what I needed to do. Teaching has been a very fun journey for me, and I am so grateful that I get to spend my days talking about literature and writing (and music and movies and art) and getting to know students with such diverse interests and skills.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know?

In 2024 I ran 1,719 miles. They included a 16 mile race, 3 half marathons, and my first full marathon in my home state of Vermont.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching?

Running, singing, reading, and writing poetry.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students? Pursue the things that bring you joy. Let yourself wander, and enjoy the things you see and learn along the way. When the voices of doubt tell you you can’t or you shouldn’t or you won’t, turn them off. When you fail, resolve to learn. When you fall, get up. Life is fast. Don’t wait.
