What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far?
In college I actually decided not to be a teacher and just pursuit a degree in mathematics. After working in a restaurant and trying to sell insurance (I made ZERO dollars), one of my co- workers at the restaurant told me that she sometimes subs at her son’s middle school. I was in South Carolina at the time and you had to observe in the school before subbing, so I was planning to observe an 8th grade math class, I was in the building for about 5 minutes and the principal approached me and asked if I have ever considered 6th grade. My reply was “they are so little”, but to be completely honest, it is the best thing that happened to me. I finished the long term sub position and then worked as a 1-1 aide. We then moved to Maryland and I pursued teaching. I taught for 9 years in Baltimore County Public schools before moving back to Massachusetts, where I also earned my Masters degree from Towson University.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know?
I had a job as an afternoon paper girl in 3rd grade and by 5th grade I save enough money for my mom and I to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins in Switzerland. We also visited Germany on that trip.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching?
Traveling, being with my family, baking and cooking, walking my dogs, and going to sporting events.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students? Be truthful, be respectful and have a little fun. Life is short enjoy every minute.
