What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far?
My journey into teaching social studies was sparked by a deep-seated curiosity about the world and a desire to empower young minds to think critically. Growing up, I was fascinated by history and how it shapes our present and future. Over the past 15 years, my journey has been incredibly rewarding. I've had the privilege of watching students grow, think critically, and develop their own opinions. Each year brings new challenges and successes, and I’m continually inspired by my students’ curiosity. It’s a joy to create a classroom environment where they feel empowered to ask questions and explore ideas. I wanted to create a classroom where students could explore diverse perspectives, understand historical contexts, and develop their own voices.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know?
I graduated from a vocational school, where I specialized in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). This hands-on program provided me with invaluable skills and practical experience when I worked in the heating and cooling industry. I had the opportunity to work on a variety of systems, learning the technical aspects of installation and maintenance. The knowledge I gained allowed me to install energy efficient Heat Pumps in my own home. This background has given me a solid foundation in understanding complex mechanical systems, which I find incredibly beneficial. The experience ignited my passion for problem-solving and has shaped my approach to working with technology in various forms.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching?
I love spending time with my family, including my son who is 17 months. And when I have any spare time, I have a deep passion for restoring retro game consoles and working on cars. There’s something incredibly satisfying about bringing old technology back to life; whether it’s meticulously repairing a classic gaming system to play nostalgic titles or repairing and modifying my cars. Each project presents its own set of challenges. It’s a blend of creativity and problem-solving that I find truly rewarding, and I love the thrill of transforming something worn and forgotten into a functional piece of art!
What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students?
One piece of advice I would give to my students is to embrace curiosity and never stop asking questions. The world is full of complexities, and the ability to inquire deeply will serve you well in all areas of life. Don't be afraid to challenge assumptions or seek out different perspectives. Learning is a journey, and being open to new ideas and experiences can lead to incredible growth. Remember, it’s not just about finding the right answers, but about exploring the questions that matter to you. Stay curious, and let that drive your learning!
